Lesson for April Improving your horsemanship skills and becoming a better horseman is a wonderful thing. I find, though, that a lot of people get discouraged for one of two reasons. Either 1) they are looking for a “quick fix” and have a hard time with the amount of time and practice that it takes to improve, or 2) they compare themselves to someone else and feel like they come up short and it’s not worth the time. My advise is simply...don’t get discouraged. Take your time, put in the time, press on, and it will be worth it. Yes, it does take time. Time for you and time for your horse. The truth is that there is no “quick fix”. But...the relationship that you will build with your horse, if you do put the time in, and practice proven natural horsemanship techniques, is more than worthwhile. Be realistic in your expectations. We must all realize that we are not all Ray Hunt. Or John Lyons. Or Pat Parelli. Or a lot of other “great” horseman. No matter how much information we learn, or how much time we put into practicing, we may never reach that goal. Michael Jordan, one of the greatest basketball players of all time and a tremendous athlete, can’t play baseball. We know, ‘cause he tried. It was great to see him try. He obviously enjoys the game of baseball, so why not. He knew he wasn't the best at it, but he enjoyed it so he did it. Most of us need to look at horsemanship the same way. We may never be “one with the horse” like Ray, but if we enjoy it...do it. |
