"Learn with a Friend" Building a Strong Foundation

Saddle and Rope

As a boy growing up in southwestern Pennsylvania, Kirk yearned for adventure and open spaces.  So when school was through he did just as Horace Greeley commanded, “Go west young man, go west!”, and headed to Wyoming.

Since 1988 Kirk has worked for various guest ranches, cow outfits, and training facilities throughout the mountain west, including ranch foreman for Paradise Guest Ranch in the Bighorn mountains near Buffalo, Wyoming from 2001 to 2006.  He feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from some great horsemen along the way, although Kirk says “even the not-so-great horsemen have something to teach if you look for it.”

Trained as a teacher, he uses his skills as an educator, as well as a horseman, to present techniques and information in a friendly, “down to earth” and easy to follow manner.  Kirk’s techniques and philosophies have been developed from attending and participating in clinics by many of today’s renowned trainers and clinicians, as well as the experience of riding or observing horse and riding relationships of literally thousands of horses.

Kirk with Horse

Kirk states that “starting with communication, respect and friendship can be achieved to lay the foundation to build everything else on.  After that it’s all very goal oriented.”  Every rider should have a goal, or several goals, in mind when they’re working with their horse.  Once the goals are established it’s through communication that the horse and rider will learn and practice the techniques that will achieve those goals.  “It’s great to see a horse and rider want to do good for the other.”

“Starting with communication, respect and friendship can be achieved…”
